Verbal fluency test
Find as many words as you can from seven letters in 90 seconds. In clinics, verbal fluency is measured differently, as the number of words said aloud in a minute for one letter or one category (Tombaugh et al., 1999).
As many words as you can in 90 seconds.
Seven letters, each usable once per word. Build words of three letters or more and submit. A word with all seven letters scores triple.
Type on your keyboard, Enter to submit
How the game works, and how it differs from the clinical test
You get seven letters. Tap them, or type on your keyboard, to build a word of at least three letters, then submit. Each letter can be used once per word. A word scores one point, and a word that uses all seven letters scores three. You have 90 seconds.
The clinical verbal fluency test is different. A person says aloud as many words as possible starting with a given letter, or belonging to a category such as animals, usually in one minute, and an examiner counts them (Tombaugh et al., 1999). Here you type, with a fixed set of letters, so the two scores cannot be compared.
The clinical norms, as a reference only
The best known norms for the clinical task come from a large sample stratified by age and education, for letter fluency with the letters F, A and S and for animal naming (Tombaugh et al., 1999). They show that the number of words depends on age and on years of education.
We do not convert your score into a clinical percentile. The formats differ too much, and a game is not an assessment.
One draw a day, the same for everyone
The seven letters change at midnight and are the same for everyone playing in the same language, so you can compare with friends. The word list is a demo list written for each language, a valid word missing from it is refused with “not in today’s list”, never counted as an error. A full dictionary will replace it before the app launches.
Questions
What is a normal verbal fluency score?
For the clinical test, it depends on age and education, which is why its norms are stratified (Tombaugh et al., 1999). For this game, there is no norm yet.
Why was my word refused?
Either it uses a letter twice, or it is not in the demo list for today. The list covers common words only for now.
What this test does not tell you
It measures how many words you find in this game today. It does not measure intelligence, language ability or any clinical condition.
It is a bonus game, outside your card, with no norm.
